Getting Kindergarten Ready during COVID-19

One of the goals for Pre-school is getting your child Kindergarten ready. Pre-school gets children adjusted to routines, rules, and schedules. It also helps build relationships with their peers and other adults, and teaches them problem solving skills and independence. Along with the academic knowledge that they gain pre-school is a valuable part of your child's academic success. With school closure many families are wondering if their child will be ready to enter into kindergarten. While homeschooling, right now, isn't school there are a few things you can do at home to help your child stay ahead of the game and still be Kindergarten ready by fall.

  • Identify Letters
  • Grip a pencil, crayon, marker correctly
  • Write their first and last name using upper and lower case letters
  • Count to 10 
    • many of them can count to 100, so don't be afraid to push them
  • Bounce a ball
    • Helps with coordination, playing catch also helps them play with others, take turns and share. 
  • Classify Objects according to size, shape and quantity
  • Speak in complete sentences
  • Recognize common sight words
  • Identify Rhyming Words
  • Using scissors, glue, and paint
  • Repeat Full Name, address, phone number and their birthday
  • Play independently or focus on one activity for 10 minutes
  • Manage bathroom needs
  • Get dressed 
  • Follow Directions 
    • GoNoodle, Repeat after me songs, help children follow directions in a fun, interactive way. 
  • Clean up after themselves
  • Listen to a story without interruptions
    • Reading stories to your kids also expands their vocabulary and builds a love for books and reading
  • Separate from parents easily  

 Being at home some of these task may be a little difficult to complete however don't worry if your child hasn't mastered all of these steps. Also do not be afraid to find different games and activities on YouTube etc. to help your child with a few of these skills.

Helping Preschool Understand Staying Healthy During COVID-19

With the economy opening back up and more and more businesses letting people inside, it is important to remember to wash your hands, practice physical distancing and if possible, wear a mask when you are going to be closer than 6 ft from someone. Helping our little ones understand the importance of these safety precautions can make all of this less intimating and can help them better adjust to the different rules and guidelines when going out in public. One thing parents can do is to simply talk to your kids. Telling them there is a germ or a virus outside that is making people very sick and here are some of the ways we can protect ourselves and others from getting sick.
