Helping Preschool Understand Staying Healthy During COVID-19

With the economy opening back up and more and more businesses letting people inside, it is important to remember to wash your hands, practice physical distancing and if possible, wear a mask when you are going to be closer than 6 ft from someone. Helping our little ones understand the importance of these safety precautions can make all of this less intimating and can help them better adjust to the different rules and guidelines when going out in public.

How to talk to children about difficult newsOne thing parents can do is to simply talk to your kids. Telling them there is a germ or a virus outside that is making people very sick and here are some of the ways we can protect ourselves and others from getting sick. Opening up this dialogue with the kids helps them understand that they are helping keep themselves safe as well as their family and friends safe.

When someone thinks of a superhero what comes to mind? Caps, superpowers, bravery and MASK. Telling kids they are active superheros during this time is a great way to bring some fun into these uncertain times. As many people are buying and making their own mask a cool idea is to have your children help make them. As they create their own "superhero" mask they are taking pride in something that they made and are more likely to wear them out in public. Even if you buy a mask, having kids decorate can them still brings a sense of pride.


Print Story Books Encourage More Meaningful Interactions Between ...Another idea is for you and your child to create a story about how to be safe during the Corona Virus. Creating this book, or story together is a great way to not only build their vocabulary and comprehension skills, but it is a great way to help them understand what is going on around them. As the author you can write out what we need to do to stay safe and your child the illustrator can draw out what you have written or vice versa.


Bringing up difficult and scary topics does not have to be a daunting task. Helping prepare our kids during this pandemic can be as simple as 1, 2, 3. Children are eager to learn and even teach! Having them understand what is going on around them helps for them to be more comfortable. They can even help their friends better understand what is going on as well and help their friends feel less afraid.
