Down Dog Yoga for the Family

If you are anything like me, you may be getting a little stir crazy during this time of quarantine. The gyms are closed, you can't find workout equipment anywhere, for some reason the parks are still too crowded for it to be safe, and I'm sure your kids are constantly saying "I'm bored!" Well I have something that I would like to share with you.  Why do you need workout equipment or parks when you have your amazing strong body that you can use to get some exercise as an entire family?

I have grown to love yoga over the past couple of years. It is a time where you can escape from what is going on around you and focus on yourself, even if it is just for a few minutes. This is also great for kids in helping them calm themselves and focus on their breathing and mindfulness. Today I wanted to share a fun app that you can download to your phone or tablet and use for some exercise and meditation with your family.

The app is call "Down Dog Yoga". Here is the link where you can find out more information: https://www.downdogapp.com. The great thing about this is that they are making their program free through May 1st. This gives you an entire month of at home workouts and other choices, besides yoga, for FREE! But for this blog, we are going to focus on the yoga aspect....

Now that you have downloaded the app and opened it, you will see a home screen that looks something like this:

This gives you the following options to make this "practice" or workout your own.
  • You have the selection of what type of yoga (with descriptions of each)
  • The level you would like (beginner to advanced)
  • If you want to add any kind of boost (any specific area of your body you want to focus on)
  • The length of the workout (5-90 minutes)
  • Length of the Savasana at the end (the time you spend just laying on your mat and breathing)
  • Then you can click on "more" and change things like the music, voice of the instructor, pace, etc.
  • Once you have selected what you like, just click start!
  • You will then see someone on the screen and hear a voice walking you through exactly what your should do.
If you have never tried yoga or may feel intimidated, I encourage you to try just a short 5 minute beginner session and see how your feel afterwards. The world is crazy around us right now and it is nice to find just a few minutes of solace. So grab your family, grab your phone or tablet, and use it to escape from the world for a little bit while stretching and working your muscles. I promise you will not regret it!

💬12 Strategies to Promote Executive Function Article Source :  Childcare Education Institute, November 2020 Executive functions are a set of skills that allow us to successfully navigate the tasks and challenges of everyday life. Helping Preschool Understand Staying Healthy During COVID-19

With the economy opening back up and more and more businesses letting people inside, it is important to remember to wash your hands, practice physical distancing and if possible, wear a mask when you are going to be closer than 6 ft from someone. Helping our little ones understand the importance of these safety precautions can make all of this less intimating and can help them better adjust to the different rules and guidelines when going out in public. One thing parents can do is to simply talk to your kids. Telling them there is a germ or a virus outside that is making people very sick and here are some of the ways we can protect ourselves and others from getting sick. Opening up this dialogue with the kids helps them understand that they are helping keep themselves safe as well as their family and friends safe. When someone thinks of a superhero what comes to mind? Caps, superpowers, bravery and MASK. Telling kids they are active superheros during this time is a great way to bri...
