Structure is Key - 7 Tips for Building Your Child's Schedule

Now that Spring Break is past and school is still out, it is time to start thinking about the daily routines of our new reality.  Although some of our kids are thrilled about this unexpected "summer like" break, the reality is, our kids need structure during this unprecedented time.  Many of you, like me, are working from home.  Not only do our kids need to be engaged in productive activities that keep them on track educationally, we need to be able to get our work done too. The key is to build a schedule for your you and your kids.

7 Tips for Building Your Childs At-Home Schedule

Here are a few tips to help you set up a schedule for your kids that keep them working toward the ultimate goals of being an educated student on the path to graduation.
  1. Build coursework into their schedule
  2. Match focused learning times with your child's developmental age and stage
  3. Alternate low energy and high energy activities
  4. Schedule breaks and meals
  5. Let your kids help you build their schedule, offering input on when to insert breaks and what order to schedule course work content.
  6. Use research-based, web-based educational courses to meet content area coursework objectives
  7. Allow for free time

Sample Schedules

Remember to adjust times and content to your child's developmental needs.  You might need to shorten timeframes for younger children and lengthen for older kids.

Helping Preschool Understand Staying Healthy During COVID-19

With the economy opening back up and more and more businesses letting people inside, it is important to remember to wash your hands, practice physical distancing and if possible, wear a mask when you are going to be closer than 6 ft from someone. Helping our little ones understand the importance of these safety precautions can make all of this less intimating and can help them better adjust to the different rules and guidelines when going out in public. One thing parents can do is to simply talk to your kids. Telling them there is a germ or a virus outside that is making people very sick and here are some of the ways we can protect ourselves and others from getting sick. Opening up this dialogue with the kids helps them understand that they are helping keep themselves safe as well as their family and friends safe. When someone thinks of a superhero what comes to mind? Caps, superpowers, bravery and MASK. Telling kids they are active superheros during this time is a great way to bri...
